I got this book because I saw this quote from "A Legend of Montrose" by Sir Walter Scott used on the Merriam-Webster website* to illustrate the use of the word "somnolent."

"By no means," answered the soldier; "I am no whit somnolent; I always hear best with my eyes shut. It is a fashion I learned when I stood sentinel."

The Merriam-Webster entry for somnolent has changed and no longer has this example.
